The chair mechanism controls many of the ergonomic adjustments of the chair, such as seat tilt, back angle, and seat height. There are three basic choices of mechanisms. The choice often depends on the user's body anthropemetrics and preferences.

Task Mechanism - Has independent adjustments for seat height, seat tilt, back angle and back height.

Multi-tilt Mechanism - Has independent adjustments for seat height, seat tilt, back angle and back height. Also has a swivel-tilt mode that allows the seat and back to tilt backward together.

Knee-tilt Mechanism - Offers the same adjustments as the Multi-tilt mechanism but the seat pivots from the front of the mechanism which enables users with shorter leg lengths to keep their feet on the floor when tilting backwards.
