Because the Carpal Tunnel (pink area) is actually created by bone (white) and ligaments, any swelling in this area has no place to expand or protrude. This causes pressure to build which crushes the median nerve (yellow) and impedes blood flow. Since the median nerve is the main nerve operating your hand, pressure on it causes the symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and may permanently damage it. Lack of blood can cause further cell damage and increases the likelihood of future swelling and resulting pressure. Stretching the Transverse Carpal Ligament (blue) enlarges the tunnel and helps reverse the process. This is the same ligament that is surgically cut in a Carpal Tunnel Release Operation, commonly performed to relieve advanced symptoms. Like cutting, stretching the ligament allows more room for the soft tissues and thus reduces the pressure.
